Holocaust Remarks Led to Divide

Israel's highest religious authority has canceled a March meeting scheduled with Catholic leaders and cut ties with the Vatican. The chief rabbinate is upset that Pope Benedict XVI decided to reinstate a bishop who has denied the Holocaust.

Bishop Richard Williamson was excommunicated two decades ago and was recently reinstated. But Williamson told a TV interviewer last week that the evidence "is hugely against six million Jews being (killed in the Holocaust)… and not one of them by gassing in a gas chamber." The Vatican has distanced itself from the remarks.

This does not affect contacts between the Vatican and the state of Israel – which has a separate relationship with the Roman Catholic church from the chief rabbinate's office.

There are now only two members of the band still alive who survived the 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of three members and the road manager. Two other members passed away in recent years of other causes.

Tom Hanks: Mormons UnAmerican

A few days ago, actor Tom Hanks said:
"The truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make
Proprosition 8 happen (the California initiative banning gay marriage). There
are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them."

He now tells People Magazine:

"Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California's
Proposition 8 as "un-American." I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the
promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination. But everyone has a
right to vote their conscience -- nothing could be more American. To say members
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to
Proposition 8 are "un-American" creates more division when the time calls for
respectful disagreement. No one should use "un- American" lightly or in haste. I
did. I should not have."

Boyd went on to say the church settled a lawsuit with the man in 2007 for more than six figures. Here's KRDO's report before Body made the annoucement.

One of them attended the University of Notre Dame and she went to the University of Michigan. Jacobson, who co-hosts the show ESPN First Take apologized and called her comments "foolish and insensitive".

More Accusations Against Haggard

The Ted Haggard sex scandal just won’t go away for New Life Church in Colorado Springs. The former pastor of the mega-church says a male volunteer has approached church officials with an "overwhelming pool of evidence" (according to quotes from the current pastor in the Rocky Mountain Times) that he held a long sexual relationship with Haggard. The church has reached a financial settlement with the accuser.

Tim James is already campaigning.

Moore got his nickname after putting a a two-ton Ten Commandments monument in the rotunda of the state judicial building when he served as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. He refused a judge’s order to remove it, so the State Court of the Judiciary kicked him out of office in 2003.

Showing the Super Bowl at Church

In a turnaround from a few years ago, the NFL is allowing churches to show the Super Bowl on big-screen televisions. Many churches cancelled their Super Bowl parties last year after the NFL threatened to sue them for copyright violations if screens larger than 55 inches were used. Several members of Congress then threatened to offer legislation to stop the NFL restrictions. In response, the league commissioner wrote in a letter to Congress last year that it will not object to live showings by religious organizations regardless of screen size. The league already makes an exception for sports bars. Advertising is a different concern. The NFL still intends on making sure no one uses the term "Super Bowl" in any ads or promotional announcements that are not sanctioned by the NFL.

Marking Roe v Wade

A different gathering is underway on the National Mall today. That’s where the inauguration of Barack Obama took place on Tuesday. But today, abortion opponents are gathering to mark the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. Here is the text of the decision.

Bible Study Lawsuit

WANE-TV has details on a lawsuit over a Bible studay at a school in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

A Second Time with No Bible

Barack Obama took the oath office a second time from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts - but this time with no Bible. The oath was administered again because Roberts fumbled the wording of the oath the first time on the steps of the Capitol. The change in wording caused Obama to pause during the ceremony

Roberts said, "I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully" when he should have said "I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States."

Obama is the third president to retake the oath because of concerns over the initial swearing-in. The other two re-takers were Chester Arthur and Calvin Coolidge.

Arthur took over after the assassination James Garfield. He took the oath the first time in a private ceremony but that was followed later by a public one at the Supreme Court.

Coolidge took the oath after Warren Harding died. His father, a justice of the peace, administered it at his home Vermont home. There were questions about whether Coolidge's father was authorized to administer the oath, so Coolidge took it a second time later in Washington.

Supreme Court Rejects Exorcism Appeal

The Supreme Court has declined to hear the case of an exorcism gone wrong. Laura Schubert Pearson sued the Pleasant Glade Assembly of God in Colleyville, Texas after members held her down and made two attempts to exorcise demons from her. Pearson claims the 1996 event amounted to assault and false imprisonment, leading her to attempt suicide.

A divided Texas Supreme Court had tossed the case out, ruling that the church was protected by the First Amendment because the case involved religious conduct. Pearson then appealed to the US Supreme Court.

Since the suit was filed the congregation has merged with another Colleyville church.

An Obama BBQ

A Tucson church held an Obama-Inspired BBQ for the Homeless. KGUN-TV reports.

A Catholic First

Joe Biden made history today by becoming the first Catholic to hold the office of vice president of the United States. Edmund Muskie would have become the first Catholic vice president if his running mate, Hubert Humphrey had beaten Nixon. Nixon had been defeated a few years earlier by the first, and only, Catholic president in history, John F. Kennedy.

George McGovern’s running mate was also Catholic. But Thomas Eagleton dropped out of the race after it became public knowledge that he had been hospitalized for mental health problems. Another Catholic took his place, Sargent Shriver. But McGovern and Shriver lost to Nixon as well.

Geraldine Ferraro ran along side Walter Mondale a few years later. While she was the first woman to run on a major party national ticket, the pair was defeated by Ronald Reagan.

Finally, the last Catholic to appear on the national ticket was John Kerry. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 2004.

A First for a President

Barack Obama became the first president to acknowledge non-believers in his inauguration speech. He said:

"...we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers."

Religion in Obama Speech

"We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

Inaugural Benediction

Joseph Lowery delivers the closing prayer at Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony.

Rick Warren's Inauguaral Prayer

"Almighty God, our father, everything we see and everything we can’t see exists because of you alone. It all comes form you, it all belongs to you, it all exists for your glory. History is your story. The Scripture tells us, ‘Hear, oh Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one’ and you are the compassionate and merciful one and you are loving to everyone you have made.

Now today we rejoice not only in America’s peaceful transfer of power for the 43rd time, we celebrate a hinge-point of history with the inauguration of our first African American president of the united states. We are so grateful to live in this land, a land of unequaled possibility, where a a son of an African Immigrant can rise to the highest level of our leadership. And we know today that Dr. King and a great cloud of witnesses are shouting in heaven.

Give to our new president, Barack Obama, the wisdom to lead us with humility, the courage to lead us with integrity, the compassion to lead us with generosity. Bless and protect him, his family, Vice President Biden, the Cabinet and every one of our freely elected leaders.

Help us, oh God, to remember that we are Americans. United not by race or religion or by blood, but to our commitment to freedom and justice for all. When we focus on ourselves, when we fight each other, when we forget you, forgive us.

When we presume that our greatness and our prosperity is ours alone, forgive us. when we fail to treat our fellow human beings and all the earth with the respect that they deserve, forgive us. And as we face these difficult days ahead, may we have a new birth of clarity in our aims, responsibility in our actions, humility in our approaches and civility in our attitudes—even when we differ.

Help us to share, to serve and to seek the common good of all. May all people of good will today join together to work for a more just, a more healthy and a more prosperous nation and a peaceful planet. And may we never forget that one day, all nations, all people will stand accountable before You. We now commit our new president and his wife Michelle and his daughters, Malia and Sasha, into your loving care.

I humbly ask this in the name of the one who changed my life—Yeshua, Esa, Jesus, Jesus—who taught us to pray:

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be they name. They kingdom come, they will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

Cathy Mickels, former Washington state president of Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum is crusading to get Driscoll removed from the agenda, claiming the pastor is “dragging the Church through the gutter.” Mickels say Driscoll is “only known for his crudeness and careless handling of Scripture” and “credits foul-mouthed comedian Chris Rock with teaching him how to preach”.

Driscoll has already drawn criticism for advice on his blog related to anal sex and lother sexual topics where he includes a link (but not an endorcement) to ChristianNymphos.org which features articles for women on sexual issues like masturbation, creative sexual techniques and domination play. Some of his provocative sermon titles include Biblical Oral Sex and Pleasuring Your Spouse.

Driscoll has not responded to the memo on his site.

County Tries to Charge School Group

Child Evangelism Fellowship is suing an Atlanta-area County for discrimination. The Evangelical ministry says Cobb County has refused to let it hold meetings in classrooms after school – unless it pays for the right, even though other groups can use the rooms for free. CEF’s Good News clubs meet in elementary schools around the country.

Warren Quiet on Prayer

Rick Warren isn’t talking about his prayer. The megachurch pastor will give the premier prayer at the inauguration of Barack Obama. He’s been deluded with more than 100 requests for interviews about the prayer, since gay activists criticized his selection to offer the invocation. But Warren has decided not to grant any interviews before the inauguration, according to A. Larry Ross - who was also spokesman for Billy Graham.

Ross issued a statement saying Warren “will let his prayer speak for itself.”

The day before the inauguration, Warren will speak at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King was once the pastor.

Gay Episcopal bishop Gene Robinson will deliver the opening prayer at the events to take place at the Lincoln Memorial. About the selection of Robinson, Warren says:

“President-elect Obama has again demonstrated his genuine commitment to bringing all Americans of goodwill together in search of common ground. I applaud his desire to be the president of every citizen.”

This is Religious Freedom Day

Obama Flip-flopped on Gay Marriage

Barack Obama has changed his view on same-sex marriage, according to the Windy City Times. The Chicago gay and lesbian publication says a 1996 questionnaire shows Obama supported for gay marriage. He was running for the Illinois Senate race at the time. During the presidential campaign, Obama said he opposed gay marriage but supported civil unions. Here is the questionaire.

Atheist Challenge Rejected

A Washington, DC judge has turned down a request to stop Obama's swearing-in ceremony from containing references to God. Atheist Michael Newdow had claimed it was a violation of church and state separation. But the judge said the religious references were similar to the prayers offered in state legislators that the Supreme Court has permitted.

The president-elect traditionally says "so help me God" in the oath and there is an invocation and benediction. This year, Rick Warren will deliver the invocation and Joseph Lowery will give the benediction.

Jesus a Muslim?

Broward County, Florida has accepted $60,000 worth of ads from the Council on American-Islamic Relations. But the Americans Against Hate say the advertisements, posted on 50 buses, are offensive because they suggest Abraham, Moses and Jesus were Muslim.

Black letters on a white backdrop read:

ISLAM: The Way of Life of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad.

The County has rejected calls to take the ads down, so the Jewish led Americans Against Hate is planning to protest outside Broward's County Hall tomorrow at noon.

Nearly $2500. Hewlett teaches at Nashville’s First Baptist Church.

Jakes Film Breaks into Top 10

The T.D. Jakes film Not Easily Broken raked in $5.6 million in just 724 theaters across the nation this past weekend. That puts it at number nine overall in its debut. The pro-marriage movie was marketed like Tyler Perry’s films and distributed by Sony. About 70% of the audience was female and 69% were over the age of 30, according to Sony’s exit polling.

Jakes is the senior pastor of 30,000-member The Potters House in Dallas.

In comparison, another church film, Fireproof, debuted at $6.8 million last September and eventually brought in $33 million.

Meanwhile, CBS is holding Jakes’ new TV talk show until this fall. The media company blames the current economic climate for the move. It’s one of many syndicated shows in the works that will have to wait to see its debut. The show was originally planned to start this Spring.

Obama Invites Gay Bishop

Barack Obama is asking the first openly gay man to be ordained a bishop in the Episcopal Church to give the opening invocation on Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial to start inauguration week. The ordination of Gene Robinson has split the Episcopal Church.

The decision comes on the heels of Obama's invitation to Evangelical pastor Rick Warren to give the invocation on Inauguration Day. That brought criticism from the gay community over Warren's view of homosexuality. Robinson said the choice of Warren was "a slap in the face".

Boston's First Deaf Priest

The Archdiocese of Boston will soon have its first deaf priest. Shawn Carey will be ordained for Boston on May 23 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Carey grew up in Westfield but was unable to take part in regular religious education classes at his home parish because they were not able to accommodate him. His family eventually found a Protestant tutor to help Carey prepare for his first communion. He planned to become a lawyer and studied political science and business at Providence College. It was only after graduation he decided to become a priest.
