Religion in America

Here’s the finding of a new survey of religion in America, set to be released today:

• The percentage. of people who call themselves in some way Christian has dropped more than 11% in a generation.

• The number of Americans who say they have no religious affiliation has nearly doubled since 1990 (from 8% to 15%)

• The only religious groups with more adherents than the unaffiliated are Catholics and Baptists.

• There are fewer Catholics in New England and fewer Baptists in the South

• The number of Baptists fell from 19% to about 16%.

• The number of Methodists is down to 5%. It was 8% in 1990.

• Muslims have doubled from 3% to 6%.

• The percentage of Catholics in the US is about the same as 1990 (now 25%)
