Showing the Super Bowl at Church
In a turnaround from a few years ago, the NFL is allowing churches to show the Super Bowl on big-screen televisions. Many churches cancelled their Super Bowl parties last year after the NFL threatened to sue them for copyright violations if screens larger than 55 inches were used. Several members of Congress then threatened to offer legislation to stop the NFL restrictions. In response, the league commissioner wrote in a letter to Congress last year that it will not object to live showings by religious organizations regardless of screen size. The league already makes an exception for sports bars. Advertising is a different concern. The NFL still intends on making sure no one uses the term "Super Bowl" in any ads or promotional announcements that are not sanctioned by the NFL.
