Sean Hannity "Stuck on Stupid"

Barack Obama's retired pastor returned to the pulpit yesterday. It was the first public appearance by Jeremiah Wright since the controversy began over his negative comments about the US. Wright preached about Jesus calming a storm and made no political remarks. The congregation at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia gave Wright standing ovations before and after his sermon.

But Wright took a swipe at Fox News when he spoke in Chicago at the funeral of a judge on Saturday at Trinity United Church of Christ. Although reporters were banned from the church, the Chicago Sun-Times got one inside who recorded Wright saying the judge "befriended "Jews, Muslims, rabbis, imams, fathers in the Catholic church and (Louis) Farrakhan in the Islamic faith. He got a standing ovation for the remark. Fox News can't understand that. O'Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity's stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe."

The Compassion Forum

Quotes from tonight’s The Compassion Forum at Messiah College in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Hillary Clinton
"I don't pretend to even believe that I know the answers to a lot of these questions. I don't."

Does life begin at conception?

Barak Obama
"This is something that I have not, I think, come to a firm resolution on. I think it's very hard to know what that means, when life begins. Is it when a cell separates? Is it when the soul stirs? What I know is that there is something extraordinarily powerful about potential life and that that has a moral weight to it that we take into consideration when we're having these debates."

Hillary Clinton
"I believe the potential for life begins at conception. For me, it is also not only about a potential life. It is about the other lives involved. I have concluded.. that individuals must be entrusted to make this profound decision.”

Obama was asked about his controversial pastor:
"Pastors are imperfect. Certainly, the membership is imperfect. I, as somebody who is sitting in the pews as a sinner, is imperfect," he said. "And, you know, that doesn't detract from, I think, what the church is supposed to be about, which is to worship God and proclaim the good news."

Obama was asked about his recent comment about “bitter” Pennsylvanians clinging to religion:
"Scripture talks about clinging to what's good. And so it's very important. My words may have been clumsy, which happens surprisingly often on a presidential campaign.. religion is a bulwark, a foundation when other things aren't going well. That's true in my own life, through trials and tribulations. And so what I was referring to was in no way demeaning a faith that I, myself, embrace. What I was saying is that when economic hardship hits in these communities, what people have is they've got family, they've got their faith, they've got the traditions that have been passed onto them from generation to generation. Those aren't bad things. That's what they have left."

Clinton was asked if she thought God thought she should be president:
"I could be glib and say we will find out. I don’t presume anything about God, I believe Abraham Lincoln was right that in admonishing us not to act as though we knew God was on our side. In fact, our mission should be on God's side. And I have tried to take my beliefs my faith and put it to work my entire life and it has been gratifying to view the little I’ve done to try and help other people, which is really what motivates me."

When Presidents Meet Popes

The Pope’s Washington visit on Wednesday morning to see President Bush will be just the second time the leader of Roman Catholics has been to the White House. President Bush will pick him up at the airport - the first time Bush has done that for any foreign leader. On top of that, Wednesday will be the pontiff's 81st birthday. This will be the 25th meeting between a pope and a sitting president. The first came 1919 between Woodrow Wilson and Pope Benedict XV at the Vatican. In 1984, President Reagan stirred controversy by establishing formal US diplomatic relations with the Vatican. Four years ago, George W. Bush presented Pope John Paul with the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. The next year, Bush became the first sitting US president to attend a papal funeral.

Scientology Protest

Mostly faceless protesters gathered at the Church of Scientology located in Biloxi, Mississippi this weekend (it's actually called Mission of the Gulf Coast Church of Scientology). They wore a variety of masks to hide their identities out of fear of reprisals from the group. hey called it Operation Re-connect as opposed to a Scientology's own term disconnection - meaning breaking away from family members. Leaders say they plan to gather again next month. Here's what one of their earlier protests looked like:

Is it Episcopal or Episcopalian?

You may have heard reporters refer to Episcopalian bishops and the Episcopalian Church. But here's how it should work.

Episcopal is an adjective (She is an Episcopal priest). Episcopalian is a noun referring to a member of the Episcopal Church (She is an Episcopalian).

An Episcopalian can be a minister, in the sense of ministering to others, and this can be either a lay or an ordained ministry.

Priests are usually referred to as the Reverend So-and-So, not Reverend So-and-So. (And they're generally addressed as Father So-and-So, not Reverend that's like addressing a judge as Honorable.)

Bishops are usually the Right Reverend So-and-So, and addressed as Bishop So-and-So.

Bishops can be identified because they wear purple. Bishops are important in the Episcopal Church.

Farnam made tapes of the classroom comments including statements like "Conservatives don't want women to avoid pregnancies.. that's interfering with God's work".

ORU SUIT GOES FORWARD

A Tulsa, Oklahoma judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit against Oral Roberts University. Two professors are suing for wrongful termination lawsuit after they uncovered alleged wrongdoing by Richard Roberts, the evangelical school's former president. They say he was using school funds to bankroll a lavish lifestyle. But the judge also tossed out some allegations made by the professors including libel claims and breach of contract claims. A gag order prevents both sides from discussing the case outside the courtroom.

BARAK OBAMA ON ABORTION

Barak Obama opposed the ban on partial-birth abortion and spoke out against a Supreme Court decision upholding the partial-birth ban. While a member of the Illinois legislature, Obama opposed a bill that would prevent the killing of infants mistakenly left alive by abortion. And now, during a town hall meeting in Pennsylvania, Obama claimed that he would not want his daughters to be "punished with a baby" because of a crisis pregnancy.

Ted Turner says he's sorry for calling Christianity a "religion for losers". Turner says he made the comments years ago and has grown since. The founder of CNN says no longer considers himself agnostic or atheist, telling AP he's attended church from time-to-time and "prays for sick friends because it doesn't hurt". He's now joining Lutherans and Methodists in a a $200 million effort to battle malaria. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod will raise more than $75 million for the project with their humanitarian arm Lutheran World Relief and the United Methodist Church will raise $100 million for the project.

I think we have a God-given responsibility to vote, and there are all of the candidates and the issues down the ballot that we have an obligation to weigh in on and let our voices be heard." Focus on the Family founder James Dobson in an interview with FOX news last night. Dobson once said he would not vote for John McCain “under any circumstances.”

Wright himself did not speak.

LAWSUIT: STUDENT ARTWORK CENSORED

A Wisconsin high school student is suing Tomah High School in Madison for allegedly censoring an art drawing because it included the words John 3:16 and showed a cross. His teacher gave him a zero for the effort. The lawsuit also claims that he was prevented from making a chain-mail cross in his metals class while at the same time figurines from Hinduism and Buddhism are in display along with a picture of a six-limbed Hindu woman and a sorcerer. The district has not commented on the suit.

SUPREME COURT TAKES ON 10 COMMANDMENTS

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case involving the Public displays of the Ten Commandments. A court in Denver told Pleasant Grove City, Utah that it had to let the followers of the Summum religion put up a monument in a public park if it allowed the display of a Ten Commandments monument. The city refused and the group filed a lawsuit. A federal judge ruled for the city. Then a three-judge panel reversed that decision. Then the full 10th Circuit Court of Appeals heard the case. It split, leaving the decision against the city to stand. Now the Supreme Court will weigh in.

MEGACHURCH DEADLINE

Today is the deadline (again) for six megachurch pastors to hand over their church's financial records to a congressional committee. Republican Senator Charles Grassley starting asking for the information in November and most have resisted. Atlanta pastor Creflo Dollar has sent a letter to Congress explaining why he’s decided to ignore the request. Although he admitted in December that his World Changers Church International took in $69 million in 2006, he now claims only IRS can check into whether he’s complying with federal tax laws. Another Atlanta pastor, Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church has also resisted opening his books but now says he’ll meet the Monday deadline. As for the others: Kenneth Copeland says he won’t comply but Benny Hinn, Paula White and Joyce Meyer of Missouri say they will go along with the request.

OBAMA PASTOR MISSES SUMMIT

Barak Obama’s longtime pastor was supposed to attend the State of the Black Church Summit hosted by Fort Worth's Brite Divinity School this weekend. Jeremiah Wright bowed out, citing security concerns. But those who took part in the panel discussion without Wright defended the controversial pastor. Dallas preacher Frederick Haynes said, “(Wright) has dared to unwrap the flag from around the cross, and when you do that, you give the cross the power to tell the flag which way to wave." The audience of about 100 applauded throughout the summit. Dwight Hopkins, professor of theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School, warned, “If the black church is censored, other churches will be the next in line."

"WE’RE SORRY"

An Atlanta area pastor has put a sign in front of his church that says We're Sorry. OBAMA APPEARS ON “THE VIEW”

Barak Obama will appear on today’s edition of The View and talks about the controversial comments of his long time pastor Jeremiah Wright. During the ABC daytime television show, Obama says, "I never heard him say some of the things that have people upset". But the Democratic presidential candidate also suggests he may have left Wright’s church if he had not retired this year. Wright is getting criticism for slamming materialism in the pulpit and then retiring in luxury.

WRIGHT’S RETIREMENT HOME

Wright is getting criticism for slamming materialism in the pulpit and then retiring in luxury. Fox News is reporting that Jeremiah Wright is about to move into a large 10,000-square-foot home in a gated community in suburban Chicago. Tax experts say the deal was set up in an unusual way because Wright first sold the land to his church which then turned around and financed it with a $10 million line of credit. Church officials refused to discuss the specifics of the home it’s building for Wright or the way it was financed.

REWRITING THE BIBLE

A pastor in the Anglican church has published a collection of Bible stories rewritten for the modern reader. In Robert Harrison's book The Rev Must Know Stories Jesus is born in an overcrowded house, Eve is sex-obsessed and Goliath is a celebrity binge drinker. Harrison preaches at St John's in Hillingdon, West London. Critics complain that the book distorts the facts.

OBAMA TALKS ABOUT HIS FAITH

Senator Barack Obama took time to defend his longtime pastor, Jeremiah Wright today. He told a crowd in Charlotte, North Carolina, “In the last couple of weeks my church became a source of controversy.. My pastor did say, my former pastor said some very objectionable things when I was not in church on those days… they find five or six of his most offensive statements and boil them down onto a 30-second recording and replay them over and over on television.”

At a town hall-style meeting Obama was asked about the role that Jesus played in his life. The presidential candidate said, “I’m a Christian. What that means for me is that I believe Jesus Christ died for my sins, and his grace and his mercy and his power, through him, I can achieve everlasting life… I think it’s very important to think that you do not have to have the same faith as me to be a moral person – there are a lot of Jewish people who are as moral, or more moral than I am, there are a lot of Muslims who are decent kind people. I don’t think they are any less children of God.”

HANNAH MONTANA “LOVES JESUS”

Miley Cyrus, star of Disney’s Hannah Montana show, says she loves Jesus. In a YouTube video with Mandy Jiroux, the best friends answered questions from fans. One of the questions was whether they are Christians. Miley responded, "Yes! We love Jesus! Happy Easter! He died for our sins. That’s how awesome he is. Jesus rocks! She dances for Jesus. I sing, dance and act for Jesus! ... Now that I think about it, I do everything for Jesus. We make the YouTube videos for Jesus. We’re Christians! We’re all about it." See the Video

WRIGHT SKIPPING TEXAS, TOO

Jeremiah Wright won’t pick up his award in Texas after all. Barack Obama's former pastor planned to visit Fort Worth this Saturday to be honored by Brite Divinity School. But he’s cancelled that appearance along with plans to speak at a Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston on Sunday. Wright already nixed a Florida trip, blaming security concerns. He says the Texas visit was dropped for the same reason.

PARENTS PRAY WHILE GIRL DIES

An investigation is underway in Weston, Wisconsin into the death of 11-year-old Madeline Neumann. Prosecutors are considering filing charges against Dale and Leilani Neumann after they allowed their daughter to die rather than seek medical help. She had a treatable form of diabetes. An autopsy shows Madeline had probably been sick for month, enduring symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and weakness. The Neumann’s say their only effort to help her was pray and that the girl died because they did not have enough faith. They don’t attend any organized church but hold a regular Bible study in their home.

OBAMA CHURCH: ISRAEL GUILTY OF GENOCIDE

An anti-Israel letter written by an Palestinian activist letter has turned up on the website of Barack Obama's Chicago church. It’s in the newsletter of the Trinity United Church of Christ from June of last year. Originally printed in the Palestine Times, a pro-Palestinian newspaper, the article is called titled An open letter to Oprah because she had agreed to visit Israel with Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. It claims the Jewish state worked with South African creation of an "ethnic bomb" that would kill "blacks and Arabs." It accuses Israel of "genocide and ethnic cleansing”.

OBAMA PASTOR CANCELED

Barack Obama's long-time pastor won’t be speaking at Bible-Based Fellowship Church in Tampa Bay, Florida as planned. The local sheriff’s office backed out of plans to provide that security. Recent videos have surfaced showing Wright making inflammatory and racially divisive sermons.

GORBACHEV STILL AN ATHEIST?

The Russian news agency Interfax has published an article saying former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev denies reports he has become a Christian. A variety of news services reported Gorbachev’s recent visit to the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi in Italy was an expression of his faith. But Interfax claims the last communist leader of the Soviet Union is still an atheist and his visit was as a tourist and not a pilgrim.

THEY SAID IT: JOHN HAGEE

My statements regarding the Catholic Church have been grossly mischaracterized. I never called the Catholic Church “the anti-Christ” or a “false cult system.” I was referring to those Christians who ignore the Gospels. - Pastor John Hagee in an interview with the New York Times

THEY SAID IT: HILLARY CLINTON

“He would not have been my pastor. we don’t have a choice when it comes to our relatives. We have a choice when it comes to our pastors and the churches we attend.” - Hillary Clinton on the controversy surrounding Barack Obama’s long-time pastor

WHAT ABOUT OBAMA’S NEW PASTOR?

Barak Obama’s new pastor (Otis Moss) was asked by NPR if he agreed with Obama’s old pastor (Jeremiah Wright) that the US is "culpable in the spread of HIV". Wright has said, "The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color". Moss did not renounce or distance himself from the comment. Instead, he said, “I think that, in terms of that particular narrative, I think that we need to be very, very honest that our government has the ability to place a Hubble telescope in the sky but we have not had the political will to shut down drugs coming into our community.” During his Easter Sunday service, Moss compared Wright’s ordeal to a crucifixion.
